Building smarter wireless solutions for frontline workers
Eighty percent of the world's workforce does not use a desk. [1] Many work on a shop floor, in a restaurant, or along warehouse aisles. For decades, enterprise communication technology has been built around an email address, a company laptop, and a reliable Wi-Fi connection. That’s largely irrelevant for an employee running a fitting room, a server working on a busy Friday night, or an inventory team racing to meet a rush-order delivery deadline.
The frontline worker technology market in retail and e-commerce is currently valued at $4 billion, with industry forecasts estimating it north of $10 billion by 2031. [2] Amidst this growth, retailers and restaurant groups are realizing that many existing tools are not actually helping people perform better in their jobs.
RTX designs communication solutions for frontline workers. Specifically, we engineer the radio hardware and noise-cancelling technology that retail and hospitality teams rely on to talk to each other in some of the noisiest, most demanding environments. Headsets running on our tech are used across thousands of stores every day. Here is what that experience has taught us about solving problems for frontline operations.
The cost of bad comms, multiplied
Jobs that aren't tied to a desk are in many ways more dependent on excellent communication in order to succeed. In a retail setting, getting the right message to the right person at the right time means a quick answer on whether this blue sweater is in stock in a medium, verifying that the gluten free meal was delivered to the right guest, or ensuring the checkout lines are manned to minimize queue times. This creates a better, smoother experience for customers and employees alike.
Frontline workers who experience clear communication among their team are much more likely to feel supported at work. When clarity and expectations improve, so does employee engagement. The opposite is also true: if messages are regularly missed, or an employee has to constantly ask a colleague to repeat the request, frustration builds. The average cost of replacing a single frontline worker is at least $4,700 USD, according to SHRM. [3] Multiply this across a retail chain with hundreds of locations, and workforce communication stops looking like a cultural line item and starts looking business critical. If you get it wrong, it’s a hit to employee satisfaction and your bottom line.
The business case is clear: better, more reliable communication is one of the few actionable interventions that touches service speed and staff turnover at the same time.
What reliable radio resolves
Frontline workers need flawless communication across the facility, even in the walk-in freezer, or past metal shelving, and next to thirty other devices doing similar work at the same time. Getting dozens of headsets to hold crystal clear audio in a building full of metal, concrete, and competing signals is a radio engineering problem that takes years of dedicated RF expertise to solve well.
This is where our experience comes into play. We deliberately build wireless solutions on DECT, not Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Because retail store networks are already carrying point-of-sale and security traffic, basic wireless systems cannot also support the device density a high-traffic floor demands. DECT solves this by providing a dedicated spectrum that protects communication.
The other problem worth solving is what a colleague actually hears once the signal arrives. Off-the-shelf noise cancellation suppresses everything—including voices. The whole point is for someone to be heard over a checkout beep, a rattling trolley, customer chatter, or a saw at the hardware counter. Our tech separates a specific human voice from the chaotic acoustic environment, instead of just turning down the volume on everything.
Design for a decade, not a product cycle
Our engineering discipline also shows up in durability. In our most challenging retail deployments, a headset gets dropped, soaked, frozen, and overheated, repeatedly, for years. To meet real-world demands, we can drop-test two meters onto concrete, seal the device against dust and water, and guarantee performance across a temperature range from well below freezing to hotter than a stockroom in summer. We have even heard stories of a headset performing just fine after a run-in with a forklift. We don't recommend testing that one yourself, but it certainly says something about what "built for retail" means in practice.
This level of durability changes the economics—and the carbon footprint—for the retailer’s fleet. In practice, this reduces avoidable waste, extends the product's lifetime, and lowers the total cost of ownership, making sustainability a direct outcome of smarter engineering.

We think the best engineered solutions are invisible by design: the customer knows only that their operational problem is solved. The tech behind that solution simply has to work, every time, without anyone thinking about it.
