GSM/GPRS Terminals – Extremely Versatile Products
"To develop three complex products within 10 months is a difficult task, for which RTX was the only choice, thanks to their vast experience in project management. RTX handled the development process so we could concentrate solely on sales and marketing," says Mr. Valery Struk, CEO Morion.
Customer vision
Russian-based Morion Inc. identified three market needs for remotely-managed smart security solutions for the home, office and car using the cellular network to provide the communications link to a wireless terminal able to talk to the sensors, data sources and actuators which monitor and control the protected environment. Morion needed a partner with expertise in these areas to enable co-ordinated product development within a very short design cycle, so they picked RTX as their development partner based on their development capabilities. This constellation means that Morion could focus on their core expertise which is production, sales and marketing.
Product target: 100,000 terminals in 2003 and 500,000 in 2004.
The RTX Solution
The development process was to rapidly bring the three identified products to market; so RTX was an active partner in all aspects from product specification to production ramp-up. The products were advanced and the focus on costs made it an exciting project.
RTX Telecom chose to use the Motorola i.250 platform because it is a well-proven platform and has a clear road map for chipsets and software for use in future 3G terminals featuring UMTS and EDGE. The platform is highly competitive in terms of price, as regards development costs and as regards the cost price for handsets/terminals.
The three products:
- Car-alarm
Car alarm is the first product made by RTX Telecom for Morion Inc. It uses GPS to establish the location of the car and then the GSM network to transmit car position data to an alarm centre or directly to a mobile phone. The alarm can communicate in a variety of ways - GPRS, SMS, voice and data-transfer - which makes it very versatile.
- House alarm
The house alarm is almost identical; the only difference is that there is no need for GPS.
- Data modem
Data modem is the third product. It is a GSM/GPRS module with USB connection to PC or notebook. The modem can be used for wireless internet and other similar applications.
The terminals can be purchased in Russia under the Morion brand. For more information about this project please go to: www.morion.ru or www.gsmguard.ru.
